Hello from Mrs. Stamer & Mrs. Cavaliere

See Inside Our Walls

sdfdsfd

(each scale of the dragon was created by a student)

Our PTO sponsored One School. One Book. for Forest Road this year. It was our first year participating. We kicked off reading by announcing the book at our Back to School Assembly. We read the book from September 11 - September 24. Students read the book in their homerooms each day.  To help build a culture of literacy, all the adults in the school also got a copy of the book to read. Conversations around the book were then happening in all rooms of the school! We did trivia questions over morning announcements about the book. Students get to keep their copy of the book to take home when they finish reading. The dragons in the book grow bigger with their love of sweets and we love watching our students grow too, so they are all getting a sweet treat at lunch today courtesy of the PTO!

One School One Book is the flagship program of Read to Them, a national nonprofit based in Richmond, Virginia.  The organization’s mission is to create a culture of literacy in every community. "Dragons in a Bag" is a much-needed contribution to the world of fantasy kidlit. We have this modern fantasy adventure starring Jaxon, an African-American boy from Brooklyn whose normal city life turns upside-down one day when his mother leaves him with a mysterious elderly lady known simply by “Ma.” Students are captivated by the idea of this hidden world of magic tucked away in a modern, familiar landscape. They loved going on this adventure with Jaxon and Ma. And, of course, were enamored with the baby dragons that come along for the ride. " - One School. One Book.

Forest Road teachers use PowerSchool Gradebook to share important information about your child's progress. If you are unsure about how to access the Gradebook through the PowerSchool Parent Portal, please watch the video titled Accessing Your Student’s Grades in PowerSchool.

Classroom teachers work to keep parents informed about what is happening in class and how your child is doing through the newsletters, email updates, sharing pictures of classroom activities, and gradebook updates.  Here are a few key points to understand about the Gradebook this year:

  • Teachers enter both assignments and the academic standards for those assignments. These standards are based on end-of-year goals.

  • Students are not expected to meet or exceed all standards early in the year. So, if you see a score of "2", it likely means your child is where they should be at this point.

For a guide on how to read your child's grades and use the new comment feature, check out the video Understanding Your Student’s Grades in PowerSchool on the D102 Parent Resource page.

District 102 has created an FAQ Page to help answer any common questions you may have.

Thank you for your support!

Curriculum Corner

In our elementary classrooms, reading groups are carefully designed to support students’ individual needs and help them grow as readers. Teachers use a variety of data sources, including MAP testing, IXL, and classroom assessments, to create small groups based on specific skills and reading levels. These groups allow teachers to provide targeted instruction in areas such as word work, phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension. By tailoring lessons to meet each child’s needs, we can ensure that students are challenged appropriately and supported as they develop stronger reading skills.

During reading groups, students engage in activities that go beyond reading aloud. They also practice writing about what they've read, which helps deepen their understanding and critical thinking. Whether students are working on building foundational skills or advancing to more complex comprehension strategies, these small group sessions offer focused, personalized instruction that helps all students succeed as readers.

Student Climate Survey Administration - Fall 2024

KIUH

In D102, we know that a strong school climate has positive impacts on student achievement, attendance rates, and school safety, as well as creating conditions for developing healthy social and emotional skills.  We also feel it is critical to hear the voices of our students. To

help facilitate that communication we provide a Student Climate Survey twice annually, once in September/October and again in February/March.

D102 will gather student perceptions of their school climate in the following ways:

  • K-2nd grade students will orally provide their input during a classroom meeting conversation with their teacher.

  • 3rd-8th grade students will individually complete an online survey in Google Forms.

Results of the 3rd-8th grade survey are confidential and will not be used to identify individual students.  Rather, the data will be used to gather an overarching sense of students’ perceptions.  Each building’s leadership team will use the survey results to inform school-wide planning while grade level teachers will use the data to help plan proactive classroom-based morning circles.

Themes identified during the K-2nd grade classroom conversations will be collected by the teacher and used to plan proactive classroom-based morning circles.  Individual student information will not be collected during these classroom conversations.

 For more information see:

Families that wish to opt out of the survey should either contact their elementary child’s classroom teacher or their junior high child’s advisory teacher.

District 102 Survey for Families with IEPs

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year!

The following survey is presented by the Special Needs Advisory Panel (SNAP). The goal of SNAP is to bridge collaboration between parents, staff members, and the district. As we plan for the school year we would love some feedback. This is a short survey to see how our district can best support our families of students with IEPs. This survey should only take a minute or two. We greatly appreciate your input.

D102 Survey for Families of Students with IEPs
