Message from Mrs. Stamer & Mr. Ontiveros

It sure was nice to have some warmer days this past week and looks like we will have a nice sunny and warm weekend. I hope you find time to get outside and enjoy the nice weather. Hopefully the children are enjoying an extra day off while we have parent-teacher conferences.

As we are having some warmer days, please pay attention to the weather as there are bound to still be some much cooler days. We do go outside for recess when it feels like it is 10 or above. Make sure your children have the appropriate warm clothes for recess.

IAR testing begins next week on Friday, March 8th. Please see the parent handout for info and tips to prepare for IAR testing.IAR Parent Handout

Curriculum Corner

Recently the 6th graders concluded a science unit on the Respiratory and Circulatory Systems. During this unit the students learned about respiration and the body’s need for oxygen as well as the vital role the circulation of blood plays in distributing that oxygen. In class we worked hard at learning the basic anatomy of both systems as well as drawing models of these processes to learn how the two systems work together.

As is tradition, at the conclusion of this unit the students had the opportunity to dissect a sheep’s heart. This opportunity allows the students to investigate the anatomy of the heart first hand and observe, touch and explore for themselves what they have been studying in class.

For many students this was their first attempt at a scientific dissection. Many were excited, some a bit apprehensive, but in the end all were able to enjoy the opportunity and grow in their learning and understanding of our body systems.

Student Climate Survey - Spring 2024

As outlined in the February 2024 D102 Newsletter, the spring administration of the District 102 Student Climate Survey is underway.  D102 gathers student perceptions of their school climate in the following ways:

  • K-2nd grade students orally provide their input during a classroom meeting conversation with their teacher.

  • 3rd-8th grade students individually complete an online survey in Google Forms.

The purpose of these surveys is to gather students’ perceptions of their school environment.   Results of the 3rd-8th grade survey are confidential and will not be used to identify individual students.  Rather, the data will be used to gather an overarching sense of students’ perceptions.  Each building’s leadership team will use the survey results to inform school-wide planning while grade level teachers will use the data to help plan proactive classroom-based morning circles.

Themes identified during the K-2nd grade classroom conversations will be collected by the teacher and used to plan proactive classroom-based morning circles.  Individual student information will not be collected during these classroom conversations.

For more information, check back on the February 2024 D102 Newsletter

5Essentials Survey - LAST CALL

We are at 21%. Thank you to those that have taken a moment to complete the survey. Although only 20% is required to receive data, we are hopeful that Forest Road can get to at least 30%! This would give us the desired data to help make improvements to our school.

You can access survey and information HERE.

Parking Reminders

Please do not park in the Barnsdale School parking lot for drop-off, pick-up, and when dropping off items during the day. Thank you!

Safe School Tip Line

In our continuing effort to ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment, District 102 provides each school with an online Safe School Tip Line found on the District and School websites. The Tip Line can be found on a tab located on the District or School homepage.  Reports made to the tip line are reviewed and addressed during official school hours, typically within 24 hours of notification.  Information provided in the tip line is kept confidential and handled on a case-by-case basis.

Multicultural Night

Save the Date! Thursday, April 18th from 6p-7:30p for Multicultural Night at Forest Road

Multicultural Night is where school families are invited to share elements of their culture or ethnicity with other members of the school community.  It will take place in the Forest Road gym, where families will have a table to display clothing, food items, pictures, maps, instruments, books- anything that they would like to display that highlights their culture or ethnicity.  As many of us get together to celebrate the holidays with our families and friends, it may be a good opportunity to gather something to share at Multicultural Night!

Pack 66 Hosting Spring Pet Food and Supply Drive

Cub Scouts Pack 66 is also proud to launch their Spring Pet Food and Supply Drive. We are collecting much needed pet food and supplies for Gypsy Cats NFP and Magnificent Mutts Rescue.

Supplies needed include dry and wet food, treats, toys, litter, scratching posts/pads, newspaper, and paper towels. The animals would also appreciate new or pre-loved blankets and towels - something to consider when Spring cleaning!

The collection will be for the month of March, ending March 31st. Porch drop-offs can be made at 505 Beach Avenue in La Grange Park or at All Saints Church in Western Springs (4370 Woodland Ave, in the outdoor bench).
