A Message from Mrs. Stamer & Mrs. Cavaliere

See Inside our Walls...

Fall Concert

On Tuesday we hosted our Fall Music Concert. Students did a wonderful job playing instruments and singing songs from "Mary Poppins Returns". We want to thank all of the families that came out to support the performers and bigger thank you to Mr. Tise for always putting together a wonderful evening for all to enjoy!

Staff "Underground" Spirit Week Fun

This week staff entertained students by conducting our very first "Underground Spirit Week". Each day all staff members had a different theme. Monday was "wear all black with flannel day", Tuesday was "anything but a cup day". I think students really enjoyed this day seeing everyone drink out of different things. Wednesday was crazy headband/headwear day. Students really enjoyed seeing fun things attached to our heads! Thursday was "favorite holiday day". We saw creative versions of St. Patrick's Day, 4th of July, Valentine's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving & more! We concluded the week with "wear your favorite college gear". Many showed pride of their alma mater today! Thank you to all the staff members that participated to make this a fun week for the students. We heard from some parents that this was a dinner table discussion!

Thanksgiving Food Drive hosted by Student Council

Each year Student Council hosts a Thanksgiving Food Drive to help the Westchester Food Pantry create Thanksgiving baskets for the less fortunate. This year we were able to send them just over 2300 items to help make the baskets a reality. We also added pet food/supplies to our flyer that that our furry friends also get to fill their tummies. We are so proud of our students, our staff and our Forest Road families that helped make this food drive so successful! The food pantry is always looking for donations and/or volunteers. Please visit their website for more information or to learn how you can get involved: https://westchesterfoodpantry.org/

Reminder about Smart Watches and Phones

Reminder: Beginning last May, D102 moved to having students leave their smartwatches in their lockers or backpacks. We recognize that many families have made a significant investment in purchasing one of these devices to help provide connectivity and access between the family and their child. However, we started to see how this level of connectivity began to cause harm and became distracting to students during the school day. While D102 schools first tried to work with students to put all watches into "School Mode", various incidents persisted and required teachers to divert their time away from instruction to address these types of issues.

We are asking for support in helping our students and teachers minimize distractions and potential incidents of bullying for the safety of all students. D102 and Forest Road also has students keep their cell phones in lockers and backpacks during the school day and we extended that practice to smartwatches as well. Connectivity is here to stay and provides many benefits to us all. However, in the interest of keeping students safe and our primary focus on learning, we are putting this practice of keeping phones and smartwatches in lockers and backpacks in place.

Should a student wear a smartwatch to school they will be asked to remove the watch and put it in their locker or backpack. Should a student have out their phone during the day, they will be asked to put it in their locker or backpack. They can put their watch back on at the end of the day for dismissal. After one warning, the teacher will hold the watch or phone on their desk for the day and return it at the end of the day. The next time it will be sent to the office for a parent/guardian to pick up. Thank you for your cooperation.

Happy Thanksgiving from your Forest Road Family!

Classes resume on December 2nd!

Curriculum Corner

The three weeks between Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break always feel like a whirlwind personally and at school.  There is so much to get done with the semester wrapping up, the assessment window, and preparing for the holidays at home! It is important that we are making the most of the next three weeks for students, so that this fun whirlwind of a time is also productive.

Here are some tips:

  • Prepare students for changes as early as possible. Let kids know what is coming up and how that will affect the schedule and their learning,

  • Talk to students about the assessment window, so they understand what they are being asked to do and why. This will also help them “buy into” the importance of “showing what they know” during assessments.

  • Make time for fun and levity.  Do the craft, readers theater, read the winter story, share traditions and memories.

  • Keep students engaged in learning.  Gamify a math lesson, give more choice for reading to get kids prepared for what they will eat over break, use AI to write stories using student names, empower students to show their learning and understanding in unique or different ways to empower.

  • Focus on community and SEL. Some students are not excited about break as others make sure fun activities don’t soly revolve around holidays, break, and no school.
